America 250 Bus Wrap

Celebrating 250 Years on the Move

To celebrate America's 250th anniversary, Valley Regional Transit partnered with Stoltz Marketing Group to create a mobile celebration piece that could travel throughout the Treasure Valley. I was brought in to develop the creative direction and design a wrap that could function as both a working transit vehicle and a centerpiece for community events.

The Challenge

Creating a patriotic design sounds straightforward, but the real challenge was finding the right balance.

The wrap needed to celebrate a significant milestone in American history while remaining welcoming, community-focused, and distinctly non-political. With a broad public audience and an open creative brief, the question wasn't what looked the most patriotic, but what felt right for the occasion.

Exploring the Direction

During concept development, three directions emerged. One stayed very close to Valley Regional Transit's existing brand. Another pushed much further creatively with a louder, more unconventional approach. The selected direction found the sweet spot between the two, creating something bold enough to stand out while remaining true to the organization's role in the community.

The Solution

Rather than relying solely on patriotic imagery, the goal was to create an ownable connection between America's 250th anniversary and Valley Regional Transit's role in the community. The final concept combined iconic American elements with transportation-inspired messaging, creating a celebration that felt authentic to both the milestone and the organization.

A patriotic red, white, and blue palette was softened with warm tan accents, giving the design a slightly more historic character while remaining practical for a working transit vehicle. A large Statue of Liberty illustration, flowing flag graphics, and messaging such as "250 Years and Still Riding" and "Red, White and On the Move" helped reinforce themes of movement, community, and progress.

The finished wrap struck a balance between bold and familiar, creating a highly visible community asset that could serve as both a functioning transit vehicle and a centerpiece for local events. Simple, iconic, and celebratory, the design captured the spirit of America's 250th anniversary while remaining accessible to the broad audience it was created to serve.

A Personal Note

This project holds a special place in my portfolio for two reasons. First, there's something incredibly rewarding about seeing your work at this scale moving through the community every day. Second, it was an opportunity to contribute, in a small way, to the celebration of a historic milestone like America's 250th anniversary.
